In July 2022, Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) and Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv (KNU) have established a strategic partnership known as the KNU-FAU Learning, Innovation, Science Alliance (in short: KNU-FAU Alliance). Continuing to develop and strengthen cooperation within the Alliance on an ongoing basis, since March 2023, two partner universities have been actively involved in the implementation of the project “Science Diplomacy in Active Conflicts” funded and supported by DAAD. The project aims to create platforms for fruitful scientific dialogue, foster cooperation through the academic exchange, match scholars with common scientific interests, as well as to contribute to strengthening the Ukrainian educational system endangered by the brutal war.

The project will involve students, doctoral candidates, and academics from FAU, KNU, and other European universities from the EELISA network. The particular contribution will be made by the representatives of Ukrainian and German civil society. The focus topics of this project include conflict prevention, conflict research, democratization processes, good governance, human rights, rule of law, and civil society development.

The project is a framework for a series of activities, such as seminars, lectures, and scientific conferences on the topic of science diplomacy. To further deepen the knowledge of the topic and foster international research and cultural cooperation, direct academic exchange between Ukrainian and German undergraduate and doctoral students is organised. KNU-FAU Summer School 2023 «Democracy Building in Times of War» is one of the pillars of the Project.
